The Backyard Cafe

Chef Delven Adams

Since I was introduced to the Backyard Café online, and have spoken to its proprietor and Chef Delven Adams on several occasions, I can guarantee you that it would be the first stop I make on my next trip back home to Guyana.

This unique dining experience is located at West Ruimveldt. There is no menu, so a reservation is required since everything is prepared and served fresh untilizing the “farm to plate” concept.

I pondered long and hard on what to write about the Backyard Cafe but realized that I would not be giving it it’s fair due unless I partake in its amazing culinary delights.
So, I came to the conclusion that I would simply compile quotes from those lucky patrons who have had that immense pleasure. Until then, I will delight in the photos that are worth more than 1000 words.

“Backyard Café is attracting food adventurers from many quarters including one visitor from the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean who went all out to find the unique eatery.”
Alva Solomon, Guyana Chronicle, June 25, 2016

“The concept of the Backyard Café is simple and unpretentious. And there is no mistaking the target audience – visiting overseas-based Guyanese. What sets it apart from other eating establishments is the personalized service and attention to your needs that you’d generally only get at home from your family, friends, and loved ones”

“The concept is one of providing value for the customer’s money. Indeed, Delven takes care to use fresh ingredients. None of the meat served at the Backyard Café has been frozen – it is all prepared fresh”

“Chef Delven Adams is not only passionate about creating delicious dishes to satisfy every palate, he also engages his customers in delightful story telling about his cooking, and the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables, a privilege many countries he says, do not have”.

“A few hours after parting with Delvin at the market, we rejoined him at his Backyard Café where he then transformed our purchases into exquisite modern interpretations of traditional Guyanese dishes.  Sitting with a steaming cold beer in his leafy Backyard, feasting on his food and meeting his delightful family should be top of the list for visitors to Georgetown”.
